Furuya Nyugyo achieves 4.3 million sales with provocative milk coffee branding
Furuya Nyugyo has achieved significant commercial success with its ‘Milk no Sokubaku’ (Milk Constraint) milk coffee, reaching 4.3 million units in sales within its first year despite having zero advertising budget. The product’s success is attributed to its unconventional naming and packaging, designed by creative director Pierre Yotaro Goda of Kayac.
Goda utilized a ‘question-based’ naming strategy rather than a descriptive one. Instead of a standard name like ‘75% Raw Milk Coffee,’ the provocative title ‘Milk no Sokubaku’ was chosen to create a sense of curiosity and cognitive dissonance in consumers. This approach encouraged high levels of User Generated Content (UGC) on social media, resulting in over 10,000 posts and approximately 45 million impressions. The product also ranked 10th in the Famima Awards 2025.
