Commonwealth Fusion Systems raises $4B to advance commercial fusion energy
The nuclear fusion industry is transitioning from laboratory research toward commercialization, fueled by massive private investment. Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has raised a total of $4 billion following a recent $1 billion equity round. This funding, which includes contributions from pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, and corporations like Google and Eni, is intended to advance its demonstration reactor, SPARC, and its planned 400-MW commercial plant, ARC, in Virginia.
Global investment in fusion reached a record $4.48 billion in 2025. Major energy companies, including Eni, Chevron, Shell, and Equinor, are increasingly backing the sector. Eni has committed over $1 billion to CFS and aims to deploy a commercial fusion plant in Europe by the early 2040s.
According to the Fusion Industry Association, approximately 46 companies worldwide are currently pursuing fusion for electricity generation, having raised a combined $14.6 billion. While most firms target grid connection by the early to mid-2030s, some academic experts suggest these timelines may be overly optimistic.
