Fusion for Energy awards contracts for advanced fusion manufacturing

Fusion for Energy (F4E), the European Union organization responsible for the European contribution to ITER, has entered into new agreements to advance the fusion energy ecosystem through specialized manufacturing and material development.

Swedish company Freemelt has secured a 300,000 euro contract from F4E to develop additive manufacturing processes for tungsten components. This project aims to optimize the production chain, including powder management and cost reduction. This follows a separate large-scale order from F4E for 33,000 tungsten components intended for the JT-60SA program.

Additionally, F4E has signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding with Amazemet, a Polish company specializing in advanced materials and metal additive manufacturing. The partnership focuses on the exchange of technical knowledge regarding manufacturing methods, testing, and qualification for in-vessel components, such as the first wall of ITER, which must withstand extreme heat and radiation.
