Futuro Nazionale member sparks controversy after burning Quran
Controversy has erupted in Italy following actions by members of the Futuro Nazionale political group. In Reggio Emilia, 19-year-old Ferenc Venturelli, a member of the group, released a video on social media depicting the burning of a Quran.
Reggio Emilia Mayor Marco Massari condemned the act as “outrageous, fanatic, and unconstitutional,” stating that tearing or burning religious texts does not constitute political expression. Massari expressed his solidarity with local Islamic communities, emphasizing that respect for different religious confessions is essential for peaceful coexistence.
The Mayor's stance drew criticism from Marco Eboli, president of the Balder Association, who accused the Mayor of applying “two weights and two measures.” Eboli argued that while the Mayor reacted strongly to the insult against Islam, there was a perceived lack of similar public condemnation following recent acts of vandalism against Christian churches in the region.
