IFSP research project on Black territories approved for Brazil-South Africa cooperation

A scientific cooperation project titled “Futuros Ubuntu” has been approved through a partnership between the São Paulo Research Foundation (Fapesp) and South Africa's National Research Foundation (NRF). Coordinated by Professor Giselly Barros of the Instituto Federal de São Paulo (IFSP), the initiative involves an investment of approximately R$ 1.1 million over three years.

The research aims to analyze connections between ancestrality, memories, ecological knowledge, and cognitive justice within Black territories in both Brazil and South Africa. Fieldwork will include studies in São Paulo's Brasilândia neighborhood, quilombola communities in Vale do Ribeira, and various South African townships and traditional communities. The project, developed alongside the University of Johannesburg, intends to produce scientific articles and educational materials such as e-books, documentaries, and pedagogical tools.

In a separate educational initiative, the Fundo Baobá's Black STEM program has awarded R$ 42,000 scholarships to three Black Brazilian students to support their studies in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) abroad. Selected students will pursue degrees in locations including the United Arab Emirates and Spain, with the program providing financial aid, mentorship, and psychological support to facilitate international academic integration.
