F/V Mistress shipwreck located near Block Island wind turbine

A shipwreck and human remains believed to be from the commercial fishing vessel F/V Mistress have been located near Block Island, Rhode Island. The vessel sank on January 1, 2019, resulting in the deaths of two crew members. The U.S. Coast Guard previously closed its investigation after declaring the wreck lost.

The discovery was made by the nonprofit organization Green Oceans. The wreck was found 92 feet below the surface, situated within 50 feet of a turbine at the Block Island Wind Farm. This proximity has led Green Oceans to call on federal authorities to reopen the marine-casualty investigation to determine if the wind farm's infrastructure played a role in the sinking.

Green Oceans has requested that the site be secured for forensic analysis and has urged the government to review whether offshore wind turbines impact navigation safety and search and rescue operations in congested waters.
