FWA technology in Italy shows competitive pricing and speeds
Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) technology has become a viable alternative to fiber optics in Italy, particularly for areas lacking FTTH coverage. According to an October 2026 study by the Segugio.it Tariff Observatory, the price gap between FWA and fiber technologies has nearly closed.
On average, the first-year cost for FWA is approximately €26.25 per month, compared to €25.29 for FTTH and €26.10 for FTTC. In terms of performance, FWA offers an average maximum speed of about 371 Mbps, which is 85.7% faster than traditional FTTC connections (200 Mbps), though it remains significantly slower than FTTH, which averages 2.32 Gbps.
Regulatory updates from AGCOM have also influenced the market, introducing a wholesale profile of up to 1 Gbps for FWA in 'White Areas,' affecting roughly 697,000 properties. While FWA provides a high-speed solution for small municipalities, its stability can be influenced by weather conditions and physical obstacles. Additionally, some operators are shifting toward remote coverage simulations rather than technician visits to reduce costs, which may impact installation optimization.
