G20 nations adopt Carolina Principles for emerging technology governance

G20 ministers concluded a two-day Innovation Ministerial in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, reaching a consensus on the governance and deployment of emerging technologies. The agreement, titled the ‘Carolina Principles for Emerging Technologies’, outlines six critical pillars: pro-innovation policy frameworks, technology for opportunity and prosperity, skilled technical workforce development, intellectual property policies for Artificial Intelligence (AI), AI standards, and industrial innovation through supply chain investment.

The summit, hosted by the US Department of Commerce and the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), also launched the AI Prosperity Objectives and the AI Prosperity Compact to expand private sector partnerships and technical workforce development across G20 nations. US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick described the consensus as a ‘historic moment of unity’ that provides entrepreneurs with the confidence to invest while protecting intellectual property.

During the event, Mexican Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard held bilateral meetings with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and representatives from the European Commission to coordinate innovation agendas. Ebrard also met with prominent tech leaders, including NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, to discuss technological development and industrial cooperation.
