G20 Innovation Ministers Meeting to feature Sam Altman and Jensen Huang

The United States will host the G20 Innovation Ministers Meeting in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on September 1–2. Organized by the U.S. Department of Commerce and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), the meeting aims to discuss AI norms, manufacturing and supply chain investments, and international cooperation.

Prominent technology leaders are expected to participate. Reports indicate that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang will attend, with Altman expected to discuss the global economic impact of AI. Other anticipated speakers include SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and Meta President Dina Powell McCormick, who are expected to participate virtually.

A key objective of the meeting is the promotion of the ‘Carolina Principles,’ a proposed non-binding framework advocating for ‘lighter-touch regulation.’ This framework encourages governments to avoid creating new regulatory bodies and instead promotes public-private partnerships to test emerging technologies. The outcomes of this meeting are intended to serve as a precursor to the G20 Leaders' Summit scheduled for December in Florida.
