G7 agriculture ministers meet in Paris to address food security

G7 agriculture ministers have convened in Paris to develop long-term resilience strategies for global food and agricultural systems. The meeting, hosted by France during its G7 presidency, focuses on addressing geopolitical and economic tensions, as well as climate-related risks.

A primary concern is the security of fertilizer supplies, which has been severely disrupted by conflict in the Strait of Hormuz. This disruption has contributed to rising fuel and fertilizer costs, subsequently driving up global food prices, which increased by 13% in the third quarter according to the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

French Agriculture Minister Annie Genevard emphasized the goal of moving “from shock management to building resilience” by seeking concrete solutions to secure supplies, improve system efficiency, and accelerate transitions to resilient models. The ministers are also discussing structural solutions for soil management and fertilization to mitigate the impact of ongoing global crises.
