G7 leaders to intensify sanctions on Russia and back US‑Iran nuclear pact

At the three‑day G7 summit in Evian‑les‑Bains, leaders of the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and guest Brazil praised the United States‑Iran agreement that aims to end hostilities in the Middle East and prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. The joint statement called the deal a "historic opportunity" and said it could help reopen the Strait of Hormuz, where traffic had been disrupted.

The leaders also agreed to step up pressure on Russia over its war in Ukraine, pledging tougher sanctions on Russian oil, gas and other sectors and promising additional air‑defence equipment for Kyiv. The European Union announced an extension of its sanctions regime through 2027 and a new package targeting energy, finance, crypto and fishing. Discussions also touched on cybersecurity, youth social‑media restrictions in the UK and France, and an AI executives luncheon hosted during the summit.
