G7 urges Iran to stop arming Houthi rebels in Yemen
G7 foreign ministers have issued a joint statement calling on Iran to cease its arming and support of Houthi rebels in Yemen. The group condemned Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia and civilian shipping in the strongest terms, warning that the escalation poses a threat to regional and global energy security and international trade.
The statement was released on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. The G7 urged the Houthis to immediately end all military actions and return to the political process in good faith.
In Yemen, the conflict has intensified as Houthi forces seized territory along the Red Sea coast, including the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait. This surge in fighting has displaced over 120,000 people. Recent Saudi airstrikes on the city of Mokha reportedly killed at least six people, including two children, and wounded eight others.
In response to the escalating threats, the United Kingdom has agreed to provide defensive air-to-air refuelling support for Saudi Arabian jets, while France has pledged to assist in securing Saudi energy infrastructure.
