G7 nations pledge funds to repair damaged Chernobyl sarcophagus
G7 nations have committed 260 million euros toward repairing the damaged sarcophagus at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The structure, which covers the collapsed reactor from the 1986 disaster, has sustained damage due to the ongoing war in Ukraine since 2022.
French Minister Roland Lescure announced the contribution during a G7 finance ministers' meeting, noting that the United States has already pledged approximately 100 million dollars. Total repair costs are estimated to reach up to 500 million euros. To secure the remaining funds, France will host an international donor conference in Paris on November 9.
The U.S. Department of State has warned that without these repairs, there is a significant risk of radioactive material leaking from the facility.
