IEA members accelerate strategic oil reserve releases

IEA member countries have agreed to accelerate the release of strategic oil reserves to stabilize global energy markets. This decision follows supply disruptions caused by conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, specifically tensions involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz.

The coordinated action aims to prioritize the release of diesel stocks to address acute shortages affecting transport, agriculture, and industry. Approximately 325 million barrels have already been released as part of a collective action initiated in March 2026. Completing previously committed but unreleased volumes could add an additional 100 million barrels to the market.

IEA member countries currently hold approximately 1.1 billion barrels in public emergency reserves, of which more than 200 million barrels are diesel. The IEA Governing Board is scheduled to meet next week to reassess market developments. Meanwhile, industry executives have warned that global commercial inventories are straining, with usable buffers reaching critically low levels.
