GA-ASI and Fujitsu sign MOU for MQ-9B drone maintenance in Japan

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GA-ASI) and Fujitsu have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish maintenance and operational support capabilities for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) in Japan. The agreement, signed on August 27, 2026, focuses on the MQ-9B, an unmanned aircraft designed for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions.

Under the MOU, Fujitsu will examine providing domestic support in Japan, including avionics maintenance, parts management, maintenance training, and technical support services. The companies also intend to explore future technical collaborations regarding mission systems and systems integration to strengthen Japan’s operational foundation for UAS.

The collaboration follows the Japan Ministry of Defense’s plan to procure 23 MQ-9B aircraft for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. These aircraft are capable of long-endurance flight and real-time wide-area surveillance, which is intended to support maritime monitoring across Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
