GAA integration process faces crisis after leadership resignation

The process of integrating the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) with the Ladies Gaelic Football Association and the Camogie Association has entered a period of crisis following the resignation of Mary McAleese as chairperson of the integration steering group.

Former Tyrone footballer Conor Meyler has called for a complete overhaul of the integration process, citing a lack of leadership, transparency, and specialist expertise. Meyler noted that the gap between member expectations and actual progress has caused significant disappointment, particularly among women and girls.

Players, including Tyrone goalkeeper Niall Morgan and Mayo Ladies footballer Fiona McHale, expressed disillusionment with the lack of tangible change. While the GAA previously aimed for a 2027 deadline for aligning the codes, the organization has now admitted it cannot commit to that timeline, stating instead that revised principles and a detailed workplan will be advanced in 2027.
