GAA integration process to take several years as John Horan named successor

The integration of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), the Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA), and the Camogie Association is expected to take several more years. During an appearance before an Oireachtas committee, GAA Director General Tom Ryan stated that while the process is not paused, it is a massive undertaking that will require more time than the original 2027 target.

This update follows the resignation of Dr. Mary McAleese as chairperson of the Integration Steering Group. GAA President Jarlath Burns noted that McAleese stepped down after realizing the association would miss its first major deadline of 2027. The associations expressed regret over her departure but reaffirmed their commitment to a unified organization.

Former GAA President John Horan has been appointed as McAleese’s successor. His appointment was ratified by the management committees of the GAA, LGFA, and Camogie Association. Horan, who served as GAA president from 2018 to 2021, will lead the next phase of the integration process.
