Gabe Jacas faces scrutiny after inconsistent preseason performance
New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel described rookie edge rusher Gabe Jacas as ‘still inconsistent’ following a preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles. While Jacas demonstrated physical talent and contributed to multiple special teams units, his performance was marked by both flashes of potential and costly errors.
A significant moment occurred when Jacas was penalized for roughing the passer during an Eagles possession. The penalty negated what appeared to be an interception, allowing Philadelphia to maintain their drive. Jacas noted that the incident served as a ‘learning lesson’ regarding league officiating and the need for discipline when rushing the quarterback.
Despite the inconsistency, Vrabel emphasized that Jacas is a ‘very coachable player’ with high effort and willingness. The Patriots organization is currently utilizing the rookie across several special teams roles, including punt protection and kickoff returns, as they continue to evaluate his development before the regular season.
