Gabi Guimarães endorses Lula for Brazilian presidential runoff

Gabi Guimarães, captain of the Brazilian women's national volleyball team, has announced her support for Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the upcoming presidential runoff. In a video shared on social media, the athlete stated that her decision is rooted in the defense of democracy, diversity, social inclusion, and minority rights.

Guimarães emphasized that while politics is not her primary field, she feels a responsibility to represent the values she believes Brazil should uphold, such as being a secular and inclusive nation. She expressed a desire to prevent what she described as a regression in social values.

The announcement comes as the presidential race heads to a second round on October 25, following a first round where no candidate achieved an absolute majority. The runoff will feature Lula against Flávio Bolsonaro.
