Gabon advances digital governance and national AI strategy

Gabon is advancing its digital and technological infrastructure through international diplomacy and domestic policy development. In New York, the Minister of Digital Economy, Mark-Alexandre Doumba, participated in consultations regarding the governance of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). These discussions focused on digital content regulation, monetization strategies for African youth, and satellite internet service provider relationships. Gabon is also seeking a seat on the ITU Council to increase its influence in global telecommunications.

Domestically, the Ministry of Digital Economy, Digitalization, and Innovation has launched workshops in Libreville to develop a national artificial intelligence (AI) strategy. Supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the initiative aims to transition Gabon from a consumer of AI to an active participant. Officials emphasized that the strategy must respect the country’s cultural diversity and ethical norms while integrating AI into administration and public services.

These efforts precede a high-level African Union ministerial meeting scheduled for October 2026 in Libreville and the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Doha later that year.
