Gabon advances economic development through financial and infrastructure reforms

Gabon is undergoing significant economic shifts through financial modernization and infrastructure expansion. The Bank of Central African States (BEAC) is working to integrate the CEMAC financial market, aiming to facilitate cross-border payments and reduce transaction frictions for businesses. Key initiatives include the new CEMAC QR Code, connected to GIMAC, and the modernization of the SYSTAC 2 system for retail payments. These developments are intended to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by simplifying regional trade and boosting digital payments, with a goal of increasing financial inclusion to 60% by 2029.

Simultaneously, Gabon is seeing increased interest from major international construction firms. The China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) is seeking to expand its presence in the country beyond public buildings to include roads, railways, and mining logistics. This expansion aligns with Gabon’s efforts to connect production zones to international markets, particularly regarding the Bélinga iron ore project, which requires significant logistical infrastructure, including a proposed 550-kilometer railway link.
