Gabon and DRC leaders sign agreements to boost bilateral cooperation
Gabon President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema and Democratic Republic of the Congo President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo met in Libreville to strengthen bilateral cooperation. The discussions focused on several key sectors, including agriculture, infrastructure, transport, energy, mining, health, education, digital technology, and culture.
A central theme of the meeting was the necessity for African nations to accelerate the local transformation of natural resources to foster industrialization and increase intra-African trade. The leaders also emphasized environmental protection, specifically regarding the Congo Basin, and discussed climate financing and carbon taxes.
Three major agreements were signed during the visit: 1. Enhanced cooperation in justice, environment, health, and mining. 2. A visa exemption for holders of diplomatic and service passports to facilitate official travel. 3. A memorandum of understanding to establish regular diplomatic and political consultations between the two capitals.
A joint commission will be established to monitor these commitments and oversee the implementation of new cooperation projects.
