Gabon and France advance health facility projects to boost local care

In Libreville, Gabon's Minister of Health, Prof. Elsa Nkana Joséphine Ayo Bivigou, inspected two hospital construction sites on 3 July. The Pont d’Akébé Medical Centre and the Pairie District Hospital, each planned with 30 beds and a range of services—including general medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, cardiology, dermatology, radiology and a shock‑room with oxygen production—are slated to open in mid‑August 2026. Staff assignments are already underway, and the projects are presented as part of President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema’s policy to bring care closer to neighbourhoods and reduce access gaps.

In the French commune of Evellys (Morbihan), local authorities have completed a new "maison de santé" costing €700 000. The facility can accommodate up to three physicians; Dr. Jacques Le Gouellec has already moved in, and a second doctor is expected to start on 1 January 2027. The building also includes spaces for nurses, an osteopath, and a medical secretary, and it extends the existing pharmacy to ensure its continuity. The project was prioritized by Mayor Philippe Cadoret to sustain medical services and retain the aging pharmacist in the town.
