Gabon and IMF continue talks on potential new programme

Gabon and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are continuing technical discussions regarding fiscal and public debt developments. These talks aim to establish the foundation for a potential new programme.

Following a formal request for an IMF programme in March, the Gabonese government conducted an audit of its public borrowing. The government reported that the audit revealed a total debt burden lower than previous estimates, which may improve the country's prospects for securing financing.

The IMF noted that upcoming discussions will focus on fiscal outlooks and the government's structural reform agenda intended to improve public finance management. Gabon is also engaging with the World Bank to secure funding for basic infrastructure. According to the country's draft 2027 budget, Gabon expects to raise 1.144 trillion CFA francs ($2.00 billion) from international markets next year, even as debt servicing and repayments are projected to increase.
