Gabon begins major road rehabilitation in Nyè canton

The provincial Public Works Directorate of Woleu‑Ntem has launched a 120‑kilometre road‑rehabilitation programme in the Nyè canton of northern Gabon. The works, directed by provincial TP chief Georges Mboulou Beka, include opening and surfacing several key sections—Oboute‑Mbomo, Oboute‑Tho’o Effack, Akam Essatouk‑Koumassi, Akam Essatouk‑Oyem and Endome‑Oboute—plus rebuilding six bridges, adding lathe‑rite surfacing and re‑profiling roads that have been impassable for years. Beka said the inspection visit “serves to shape opinion on the government's actions regarding road maintenance in the Woleu‑Ntem province.”

In a separate, smaller project near Owendo, the 500‑metre stretch linking the SEEG Akournam power plant to the Carrière junction remains in a dilapidated state after the transition committee halted construction. Local residents, who rely on the road as the only bypass to the town and technical school, have appealed to President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, but “nothing is less certain,” they say, as no new work is scheduled.

Both initiatives highlight ongoing challenges in Gabon's infrastructure development, ranging from large‑scale provincial upgrades to stalled local road repairs.
