Gabon celebrates inaugural National Day of Retirees and the Elderly

Gabon has celebrated the inaugural National Day of Retirees and the Elderly. The event, themed ‘The well-being of the retiree and the elderly in the era of the Fifth Republic’, was established following a Council of Ministers decision in June 2026 and officialized by decree in September 2026.

Official ceremonies were held at the Omar Bongo Ondimba Congress Center in the presence of Vice-President of the Government Hermann Immongault and other government members. During the launch, Immongault emphasized the nation's duty to provide respect, consideration, and recognition to those who served the country through various professional sectors.

Regional celebrations also took place in Lambaréné, organized by the provincial delegation of the National Social Security Fund (CNSS). Activities in Lambaréné included a thanksgiving mass, cultural animations, and a community meal. While the celebrations serve as a tribute to the contributions of elders to society, representatives of the retirees have expressed expectations regarding the improvement of living conditions for the elderly.
