Gabon challenges US at WTO over poultry import ban

Gabon is facing a trade dispute with the United States at the World Trade Organization (WTO) following its decision to ban imported broiler chicken imports, effective January 1, 2027.

To promote food sovereignty and stimulate local poultry production, the Gabonese government aims to reduce its reliance on foreign meat. In 2021, poultry imports to Gabon reached $97.7 million, and in 2023, frozen parts and offal accounted for $86.3 million. The government intends to use these funds to support local farmers, feed producers, and distributors.

The United States has challenged this move before the WTO, citing multilateral trade agreements. In response, Gabon's Minister of Agriculture, Pacôme Kossy, stated that the country is preparing its legal and diplomatic strategy “with serenity.” Gabon is exploring protections for nascent industries under Article XVIII of the GATT, a provision that allows developing nations to implement certain protective measures under specific conditions.
