Gabon Court of Accounts targets 1,700 billion CFA francs in misappropriated funds

The Gabon Court of Accounts has identified approximately 600 cases involving alleged misappropriation of public funds, totaling 1,700 billion CFA francs. The investigation covers several decades, with some irregularities dating back nearly twenty years. The affected parties include ministers, mayors, public accountants, and private companies that reportedly received funds without delivering the required services.

President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema has set a one-month deadline, running from September 7 to October 7, 2026, for the individuals and entities involved to regularize their financial situations. Failure to comply may result in cases being referred to criminal courts.

The sum in question represents a significant portion of the national economy, equivalent to roughly 31% of the 2026 rectified state budget. The audit has focused on sensitive sectors, including social security, medical evacuations, and funds intended for economically vulnerable Gabonese citizens.
