Gabon deploys military and agencies to tackle Libreville water shortage

Since a state of emergency on 1 July, Gabon’s government has taken direct control of water distribution in Libreville, requisitioning the army and assigning the fire service, republican guard, military engineering and gendarmerie to deliver water via tankers. The move follows severe shortages blamed on prolonged low rainfall and decades of under‑investment in the water system. Officials have seized 55 suspect tanker trucks, banned informal water sales, and set strict tariffs of about 3 000 CFA per cubic metre.

Vice‑President Alexandre Barro Chambrier met with the water‑access minister, SEEG, SUEZ and security forces to review progress. The government reports an increase in water‑truck numbers from 50 to 170, price controls, network modernization, and plans for new wells and solar‑powered pumps to extend supply beyond the capital.
