Gabon expands iron ore mining through Milingui and Belinga projects

Gabon is advancing major iron ore projects aimed at diversifying its extractive economy beyond manganese and hydrocarbons. In the Nyanga province, the Milingui iron project is entering its operational phase, with operators aiming to ship the first cargo of raw ore before the end of 2026. Local authorities have visited the site to monitor progress, highlighting the project's potential to create jobs and industrial ecosystems in the region.

Simultaneously, the Belinga iron ore project is undergoing significant intensification. Fortescue Belinga has announced an expansion of its exploration program, doubling its number of drill rigs from five to ten. The company aims to complete approximately 375,000 meters of drilling across the Belinga, Batouala, and Boka Boka zones. To support this, Fortescue has extended its contract with Capital Limited to increase operational capacity.

These developments are expected to boost local employment. The Belinga project currently employs roughly 1,250 people—over 83% of whom are Gabonese nationals—and aims to increase this figure to 1,450. The expansion is intended to create further opportunities for Gabonese suppliers, subcontractors, and service providers.
