Gabon expands national fiber optic backbone

Gabon is expanding its national fiber optic backbone to improve internet distribution across the country. Authorities in Libreville have validated a public-private partnership between the Société de patrimoine des infrastructures numériques (SPIN) and Gabon Fiber S.A. to manage the network's development and operation.

The project involves deploying an additional 1,651 kilometers of fiber optic cable, which will nearly double the existing national backbone. This initiative aims to reduce the digital divide by connecting rural areas, businesses, universities, and public services to the national network.

In addition to the domestic expansion, Gabon is preparing for connection to the Médusa Afrique submarine cable, expected by 2028. This international connection is planned to land at Port-Gentil and extend into the interior to integrate international capacity with the national infrastructure.
