Gabon faces rising debt projections and administrative reforms

Gabon is facing significant fiscal and administrative challenges as the government attempts to modernize its state functions and stabilize public finances. According to projections from the World Bank, Gabon’s sovereign debt could approach 80% of its GDP by the end of 2026. While a recent GDP rebasement and government audit temporarily lowered the apparent debt ratio to 68.91%, experts warn that structural vulnerabilities and accumulated financial commitments remain high.

Simultaneously, the Gabonese government is pursuing administrative reforms to improve public service efficiency and resource management. Laurence Ndong, the Minister of Civil Service and Capacity Building, recently met with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) resident representative to discuss progress on these reforms. The modernization strategy, supported by President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, focuses on digitalization, the revision of general statutes, and the implementation of an integrated human resources management system to enhance transparency and performance.
