Gabon faces scrutiny over financial transparency and political unity
A recent report from the United States Department of State has raised concerns regarding financial transparency in Gabon. Despite President Brice Oligui Nguema’s focus on anti-corruption and good governance since the 2023 transition, the report highlights significant gaps in public finance management. Key issues include the late publication of executive budget projects, which limits parliamentary oversight, and the continued opacity surrounding the debt of state-owned enterprises and the Gabon Strategic Investment Fund (FGIS).
The report also notes that regulations governing the allocation of permits for oil, mining, and timber are frequently bypassed in practice. Furthermore, the Court of Accounts has been criticized for a lack of independence and the withholding of audits. Addressing these issues is seen as vital for Gabon to secure international investor confidence and negotiate programs with the IMF.
In a separate political development, Joachim Mbatchi Pambou, president of the Forum pour la Défense de la République (FDR) and former presidential candidate, has proposed a ‘National Consolidation Pact.’ Aimed at fostering national unity, the proposal calls for a collective commitment to civil peace, the rule of law, social justice, and the local transformation of natural resources. Mbatchi Pambou emphasized the need to move away from personal political confrontations toward a debate focused on essential national priorities.
