Gabon implements new measures to track natural resource wealth and promote green entrepreneurship
Gabon is advancing initiatives to integrate its natural resources into its formal economic framework through new statistical and entrepreneurial programs.
The African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Gabonese government have signed a memorandum of understanding to fund the Project to Support the Development of Gabon's Forest and Extractive Satellite Accounts (COSAFE). This project aims to provide precise statistical data regarding the economic contribution of the country's forests, oil, and mining sectors. By establishing these satellite accounts, the government intends to better measure revenue, growth, and the impact of natural resources on the national economy to improve public policy decisions.
Simultaneously, efforts are underway to transform biodiversity into a driver of economic innovation. A partnership between the SOGAFRIC Foundation and the Institut Léon Mba has introduced the ‘Green and Blue Leader’ prize. This initiative encourages entrepreneurship focused on the sustainable use of biological resources and ecosystems. The goal is to transition from a purely conservation-based model to a ‘nature economy’ that fosters jobs in sectors such as sustainable agriculture and agro-transformation.
