Gabon launches Gabon Infini initiative to protect ecosystems

The government of Gabon has launched the Gabon Infini initiative, a Project Finance for Permanence program designed to mobilize up to US$200 million over the next ten years. The initiative aims to support community development and biodiversity protection, aligning with the nation's goal to safeguard 30 percent of its terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems by 2030.

Partnering with organizations such as The Nature Conservancy and Enduring Earth, the program seeks to integrate biodiversity into Gabon's national development strategy. The initiative plans to protect an additional 3.7 million hectares of land and improve the management of 3.8 million hectares of existing protected areas.

Vice-President Herman Immongault stated that the program is a pillar of the 2026-2030 National Growth and Development Plan. By creating local economic opportunities and securing rural livelihoods, the initiative intends to turn biodiversity into a strategic driver of national prosperity and economic growth.
