Gabon pursues trade defense, fishing renegotiations, and drone regulation

Gabon is pursuing several strategic economic and regulatory initiatives. The government is preparing a legal defense at the World Trade Organization (WTO) following challenges from the United States regarding a planned ban on broiler chicken imports set for January 2027. Agriculture Minister Pacôme Kossy indicated that the country intends to utilize GATT Article XVIII to protect its developing domestic poultry sector.

In the maritime sector, Gabon has launched negotiations to renew its fishing partnership with the European Union. This move follows the unilateral suspension of a previous agreement in 2025. The renegotiation aims to address economic imbalances, as previous data showed that European vessels captured significantly fewer fish than projected and only 23 percent of captures were landed at the port of Libreville.

Additionally, the country hosted the inaugural Gabon Drone Expo to address the regulation and economic potential of unmanned aircraft systems. Authorities are currently finalizing the new Gabonese Aeronautical Regulation (RAG 4.5) to provide a structured framework for drone operations within civil aviation airspace.
