Gabon social media suspension continues without clear timeline
Social media platforms, including Facebook and TikTok, remain suspended in Gabon more than six months after the Haute Autorité de la Communication (HAC) implemented the measure on February 17, 2026. The suspension, originally intended to combat defamatory and hateful content that could threaten national security, continues without a clear timeline for restoration.
Users have reported degraded internet speeds, impacting the digital economy. The restrictions affect entrepreneurs, media outlets, and businesses that rely on these platforms for communication and commerce. While the government previously suggested a “progressive return,” recent communications from the Ministry of Communication emphasize that platforms must meet local requirements regarding responsibility and local representation.
