Gabon launches US$195 million cement and clinker plant project
Gabon has initiated a US$195 million (114 billion CFA francs) project to construct a clinker line and cement plant. The facility, a joint venture between the Gabonese government, Hope Global Investment, and Hong Kong-based Conch Investment Holding, aims to produce approximately 1 million tonnes of clinker and 1 million tonnes of cement annually.
The project is part of the industrial component of the Mondah Green Beach coastal city program near Libreville. It seeks to reduce Gabon's reliance on imports, as the country imported nearly 500,000 tonnes of clinker in 2024 following the shutdown of local production in 2014. The initiative aims to secure the domestic supply and position Gabon to export to the sub-regional market.
The plant is expected to create at least 200 direct jobs, with priority given to Gabonese workers and firms, alongside provisions for technology transfer and training. This development follows discussions from the Gabon-China Economic Forum held in September 2024.
