Gabonese MP Augustin Yembi repatriated after Kigali airport arrest
Gabonese lawmaker Augustin Lobelle Yembi has been repatriated to Libreville following his detention in Rwanda. The incident occurred on September 3, 2026, at Kigali International Airport, where Yembi was arrested after a physical altercation with a RwandAir supervisor while in transit.
To prevent the incident from escalating into a broader diplomatic crisis, high-level mediation took place between Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema and Rwandan President Paul Kagame. Citing the “excellence of the fraternal relations” between the two nations, Rwandan authorities authorized Yembi’s departure on September 6, allowing him to bypass the Rwandan judicial process.
Despite his return to Gabon, Yembi faces legal consequences. Upon arrival in Libreville, he was immediately placed at the disposal of the Gabonese justice system. The Gabonese National Assembly is monitoring the situation, including potential implications regarding his parliamentary immunity and the legal proceedings that will determine the outcome of the assault allegations.
