Gabriel Attal conducts ‘1,000 bistros’ campaign events

Gabriel Attal, a candidate for the French presidential election, is conducting a campaign initiative titled ‘1,000 bistros’ aimed at engaging citizens in local cafes and bars. The campaign seeks to present a more accessible image to counter his reputation as an austere Parisian and to compete with rival Édouard Philippe.

Recent events in Nîmes saw approximately fifty people gather to discuss education, featuring former Minister Anne Genetet. Genetet addressed recent PISA results, noting that while overall rankings are a concern, French students often perform at high levels when looking specifically at general or technological tracks. She also highlighted a perceived improvement in sixth-grade national evaluations.

However, the initiative has faced criticism regarding its effectiveness and reach. Reports indicate low attendance at various locations, such as Lorient, Paris, Toulouse, and Hérault, where turnout was notably small. While supporters like Prisca Thévenot argue that the format is intended for intimate exchanges rather than large meetings, critics suggest the events are primarily attracting existing militants rather than the broader public.
