Gabriel Boric defends leftist convictions at Pan-American Congress

Former Chilean President Gabriel Boric reaffirmed his leftist convictions during the Pan-American Congress in Montevideo, Uruguay. Speaking at the launch of Nueva Sociedad magazine alongside former ministers Camila Vallejo and Jeannette Jara, Boric stated, “We are not going to apologize for being left-wing nor for having convictions of social equality.”

Boric argued against the trend of moderating political discourse to appeal to the center, describing it as a “fanaticism for moderation” that leads nowhere. He emphasized that while the left must learn from electoral defeats and conduct critical self-reflections, it should not abandon its core identity or principles.

In response to the political climate, José Antonio Kast addressed supporters in Chile’s Ñuble region. While not mentioning Boric directly, Kast defended a platform focused on security, economic growth, and strict prison regimes to combat organized crime, asserting that Chile has chosen a path of security and progress.
