Gabriel Bortoleto defends 2026 Formula 1 technical regulations

Audi driver Gabriel Bortoleto has defended the 2026 Formula 1 technical regulations, arguing that drivers must be able to adapt to any vehicle technology rather than relying on a single driving style.

The new regulations involve a shift toward greater electric power, with a ratio of 47-53 between electric and internal combustion components. This change requires significant battery management and has introduced new complexities, such as "superclipping" and self-learning propulsion elements. While some drivers, including Oscar Piastri, have expressed frustration that these systems can take control away from the driver, Bortoleto maintains that adaptability is a fundamental requirement for the world's top drivers.

Bortoleto noted that while his fundamental style has not changed drastically, the new energy deployment requirements necessitate fine adjustments depending on corner entry, exit, and upcoming straightaways. The debate over driver control and vehicle behavior has already contributed to discussions regarding rule changes for 2027 and 2028.
