Gabriel García Márquez school in Medellín to reopen after shooting

The Gabriel García Márquez Educational Institution in the Villa Lilliam neighborhood of Medellín will resume in-person classes on September 15, 2026, following a shooting incident at the school. The return will follow a staggered schedule: sixth and seventh graders return Tuesday, eighth and ninth on Wednesday, and tenth and eleventh on Thursday. Friday will feature recreational and sporting activities supported by the District and Inder.

To ensure safety, authorities will continue conducting ‘pedagogical searches’ to prevent dangerous objects from entering the premises. Medellín Mayor Federico Gutiérrez noted that the 17-year-old perpetrator, who was previously out of school, used a firearm to attack a teacher, linking the incident to mental health and addiction issues. The student is currently recovering at Hospital San Vicente Fundación.

An art teacher has requested a review by the Threatened Committee following reports of potential intimidation, and the Metropolitan Police will provide accompaniment. Security Secretary Manuel Villa stated that legal proceedings are underway, while the Prosecutor's Office will determine responsibilities for the event.
