Gabriel Harry's Sunshade Plan to Extend Earth's Habitability
Earth is projected to become uninhabitable in about one billion years as the Sun expands, raising temperatures, boiling oceans and stripping the atmosphere. Independent researcher Gabriel Harry has outlined a mega‑engineering solution that would build a 700,000‑kilometre‑wide sunshade positioned just outside the Moon’s orbit at the Earth‑Sun Lagrange Point L1. The shade, made of ultra‑thin (0.1 mm) aluminum and anchored by a carbon cable to a mass at L1, would block roughly 70 degrees of the sky, reducing solar radiation and protecting the planet from the Sun’s growth.
Harry’s study, posted on the arXiv pre‑print server and slated for publication in the Journal of the British Interplanetary Society, claims the system could keep Earth habitable for up to 9.1 million trillion years, shielding it from solar luminosity, tectonic shutdown, water loss, axial changes, asteroid impacts and other long‑term threats.
