ERC confirms Gabriel Rufián as lead candidate and announces pact with Podemos

Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) has confirmed that Gabriel Rufián will lead its list for the upcoming general elections on November 29. This decision follows weeks of internal debate regarding leadership and specific conditions for his candidacy.

In a significant shift for the Spanish left, ERC and Podemos have formalized an electoral pact. Under this agreement, Podemos will not present its own candidacy in Catalonia and will instead support the ERC lists. In return, Gabriel Rufián and Irene Montero will campaign together in various territories outside of Catalonia to maximize their electoral impact.

This alliance has caused a fracture in the existing 'Frente Amplio' coalition, which includes Sumar, Más Madrid, Izquierda Unida, and Comuns. The pact between ERC and Podemos effectively bypasses the Frente Amplio structure, leading to criticism from leaders like Ada Colau and Gerardo Pisarello, who argue the move divides the progressive space ahead of the elections.
