Gabriel Serville, President of French Guiana, dies at 67
Gabriel Serville, the president of the Collectivity of French Guiana, passed away on Wednesday, September 30, at the age of 67. He had been hospitalized at the Cayenne University Hospital since Sunday following a battle with stomach cancer.
Serville had a diverse career, beginning as a mathematics teacher and high school principal before entering politics. His political trajectory included serving as the mayor of Matoury and as a deputy for French Guiana in the National Assembly from 2012 to 2021. He was a member of the Gauche démocrate et républicaine (GDR) group.
Throughout his tenure, Serville was noted for his dedication to the development of French Guiana and his efforts to combat illegal gold mining. He also contributed to social issues, including the submission of a report in 2018 regarding the fight against anti-LGBT discrimination in overseas territories.
