Nigeria sees high‑profile cybercrime trial and trader death investigation

Former Nigerian Bar Association Shendam Branch chairman Gabriel Tsenyen has been arraigned by the State Security Service under the Cybercrimes Act for allegedly publishing false claims on a community WhatsApp group. The Federal High Court in Abuja is hearing the four‑count charge, while former NHRC chair Chidi Odinkalu warned that commenting on X is premature, calling the charges “difficult to take seriously.”

In Enugu State, human‑rights lawyer Chinedu Egbugo petitioned the police to investigate the death of trader Emmanuel Asogwa, alleging that landlord Ozoemena Nwaojobe used forced ejection, intimidation and “fetish rituals” – including barricading the shop with palm leaves and chanting incantations – before the fatal incident. The petition seeks prosecution for murder and related offenses.
