Gabriela Firea proposes housing solutions for Romania to the EU

European Parliament member Gabriela Firea has submitted proposals to address the housing crisis in Romania, presented to European Commissioner Dan Jørgensen. The proposals are part of the discussions surrounding the Affordable Housing Act.

Firea noted that while Romania has the highest rate of homeownership in the European Union, approximately 4 in 10 Romanians live in overcrowded conditions. To combat this, she suggested several measures for Romania, including the use of European funds for affordable housing loans and the creation of dedicated housing for doctors, nurses, and teachers.

Additional proposals include converting unused public or industrial buildings into residential spaces, reinforcing buildings at seismic risk, and installing elevators in apartment blocks through the ‘Lift pentru viață’ project. She also advocated for increased accessibility to student dormitories, including options for married students.
