Gabriela Hearst dress sells for $12,160 at Christie’s auction

A Gabriela Hearst hand-painted linen maxi dress featured in the film ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ sold for $12,160 at a Christie’s online auction. The sale significantly exceeded its high estimate of $4,000. The garment, which required 40 artisans to create, was part of a dedicated sale of apparel and accessories from the film, with proceeds partially allocated to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

The auction included various items, such as costumes worn on screen, pieces prepared for the film but not used, and couture worn during the press tour. This event highlights a growing trend in the secondary fashion market, which reached $55.5 billion in 2025. Younger demographics, specifically Millennials and Gen Z, are increasingly driving this market, with Christie’s reporting that 44 percent of 2025 participants belonged to these cohorts. Experts suggest this shift toward collecting archival and couture pieces may be driven by a perceived decline in the quality of modern, mass-produced clothing.
