Gabriela Jaquez embraces Mexican American heritage with Chicago Sky

Chicago Sky rookie Gabriela Jaquez, the franchise’s top draft selection, is embracing her Mexican American heritage as she begins her professional WNBA career. As one of a small number of Mexican American players in the league, Jaquez expressed pride in representing both the Mexican and Latino communities.

Born in California to parents who played college basketball, Jaquez has a deep family connection to the sport. Her older brother, Jaime Jaquez Jr., currently plays for the Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA. Gabriela previously played for the Mexican national basketball team and helped lead UCLA to a national championship during her final collegiate season.

Since joining the Chicago Sky, Jaquez has begun exploring her new home, including visiting the Pilsen neighborhood, a prominent hub for Chicago’s Mexican American community.
